Pimlico Academy

Everyone's a reader

We marked World Book Day today with staff dressing up as characters from books. A big shout-out to the English department for their take on characters from the Wizard of Oz (and especially to Mr Stuchfield for a remarkable costume! , to the History department who came as a handful of the 101 Dalmatians, to Maths who came as principal stars of Harry Potter and were joined by the Inclusion team who came as an array of Harrys, and to the Social Science department who came dressed as though lifted directly from the pages of Margaret’s Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale.

Ms. Salloo, Head of English, gave a brilliant assembly on what reading gives you: companionship, empathy, a moral compass and independence. We particularly loved the line “it’s not in an echo chamber that we grow”. Books open to us doors into thoughts and ideas different from our own and that is a wonderful thing.

We love reading at Pimlico Academy! As well as the brilliant and challenging texts our students read as part of the English curriculum, students have structured reading during tutor time twice per week where they read a wide array of texts from across the literary canon. Look out for news in the coming weeks about our new academy library… exciting times!
