Covid-19 Mental Health Support

These are really the most unusual times for all of us.  Even those who usually take life in their stride are feeling anxious and uncertain; the pressures that result from worries about health and livelihoods, coupled with isolation from friends and family, and in the absence of the routines that usually sustain us, mean that life at the moment is tough.

This can take its toll on our mental health and well-being, and our young people are not immune to this. In fact, research suggests that teenagers are carrying even greater emotional burdens than they do already and we know that our young people are facing a range of mental health challenges: extended isolation from peers and friends is contributing to raised levels of anxiety and lower mood as young people spend time away from the routines of school life and many are worried about the health and wellbeing of those they care about.

We take supporting student mental wellbeing seriously. This is why, since the start of January, we have ensured that we have been in daily contact with every one of our pupils through our tutor time programme as well as delivering a full timetable of live lessons. Students who rely on the academy for support in a host of ways have been able to continue to access that support at a distance.

To mark Children’s Mental Health Week 2021 (1st – 7th February), we want to advertise the wealth of external mental health support available for young people. At Pimlico Academy, we have two main mental health organisations whose support our students can access, the first is ‘Place2Be’, the other ‘BWW MIND’.

Place 2 Be

You will also find some useful ideas for mental wellbeing activities on their website.

“TEXT HELP” This is a crisis text line offered by Place2Be. If your child needs urgent support, they can text HELP to 85258 anytime, day or night. It is open 24/7, is free to use, and a trained volunteer will aim to reply within 5 minutes. They can stop the conversation at any time by texting STOP.

Texts are free from EE, O2, Vodafone, 3, Virgin Mobile, BT Mobile, GiffGaff, Tesco Mobile, Telecom Plus, Lebara, iD Mobile and Sky Mobile.


MIND have been an integral part of the support offer available to all pupils; they work hard to ensure the wellbeing of young people is met through their services and they offer a signposting service to ensure everyone has the support necessary for their individual needs. You will also find helpful general information about supporting your child’s mental health on their website.

Young Minds

This mental health charity explores the impact of Coronavirus on our wellbeing, giving specific advice on the impact it may be having on individuals and how to overcome these difficulties. There is also a helpline for parents and carers which offers support by phone, email or web-chat. Young people can also text 85258 to access free and confidential support.


Kooth is an online wellbeing community which has online counsellors available from Monday to Friday 12pm – 10pm and Saturday to Sunday 6pm – 10pm.  Young people can create an account and chat to counsellors, read articles from young people going through the struggles they are. They can also write in a daily journal or access support from the community.


This is the UK’s leading support service for those under-25. The service offers essential support for young people, ranging from mental health to financial needs. There is useful expert advice on the page, with lots of stories from young people sharing their experiences.

Childline     Phone: 0800 1111

Childline is a free, private and confidential service for children, with counsellors available to talk every day from 7.30am- 3.30am. It is also available through web-chat, email or the App “For Me”.

Cruse Bereavement Care

This national bereavement charity offers support on the telephone or online. You will also be able to find information about your nearest branch that can help you more locally.

Hope Again

This is the youth website of Cruse, and has been created for young people, by young people. The support, advice and signposting is offered online only, with the aim of breaking the isolation that grief brings so that young people suffering bereavement can feel less alone.
